  2. ** INTRODUCTION
  3.  
  4. README.TXT file for TNGEPLST.* and DS9EPLST.*.  Written by Blake 
  5. Nancarrow.  Read it!  Don't be lazy.  It'll only take a minute...
  6.  
  7. This file accompanies the Star Trek TNG and DS9 episode guides.  They are
  8. WordPerfect 5.1 documents.  The guides are meant to be small and portable,
  9. ideal for the coffee table.  They are fairly easy to print for yourself as
  10. long as you use an appropriate font but, MOST IMPORTANTLY, print their
  11. pages in the appropriate order.  This is particularly true if you do not
  12. have a duplex printer at your disposal.  Also, to assemble the guides, you
  13. will need a fairly large stapler...  Finally, this document has a graphic
  14. on the front page:  if your printer doesn't like these graphics then
  15. suppress or delete them.
  16.  
  17. ** DUPLEX PRINTING
  18.  
  19. Originally, these documents were produced for an Epson dot-matrix printer.
  20. A lot of manual effort is required in printing them.  If you have a duplex
  21. printer, that is, one that can print automatically to both sides of a sheet
  22. of paper, then you can put all this technology to use.  New documents have
  23. been designed for printing on an Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IID or IIID
  24. duplex laser printer.  They look great on this printer *and* require
  25. considerably less effort on your part!
  26.  
  27. ** THE NUMBERS
  28.  
  29. The guides, in their final form, are 4¼ inches wide and 11 inches tall.
  30. This is achieved by folding normal 8½ by 11 inch paper in half across the
  31. length.  They are bound like a book with staples.
  32.  
  33. The Next Generation document is 12 pages in length;  Deep Space Nine is 6
  34. pages long.  When folded in half, in a booklet form, they have then twice
  35. as many "pages."  Before you print these files, ensure they are the correct
  36. length.  If your "small" printer font is too large, WordPerfect will
  37. automatically extend the document but this will adversely affect the paging
  38. in the guide.  DON'T PRINT THEM IF THEY ARE LONGER THAN 12 OR 6 PAGES.

  40. ** INCLUDED FILES
  41.  
  42. The files contained within this archive are as follows:

  50. That's it!

  52. ** LOADING OR RETRIEVING
  53.  
  54. When you load any of these documents, you will receive a warning that 
  55. the printer driver is not found, "formatting for default printer."  This
  56. is a normal WordPerfect warning when you build a document with one
  57. printer but print using a WordPerfect that doesn't know about that
  58. printer.  Ignore this specific warning but be sure to check the fonts
  59. that WordPerfect uses in place of the ones I selected.  And, once again,
  60. preview the document to ensure it is the proper length.  See the notes
  61. below about changing the document and WordPerfect to work.

  63. ** PRINTING ON A DUPLEX PRINTER
  64.  
  65. You can print your own copies quickly if you have the following:
  66.  
  67.         microcomputer
  68.         WordPerfect 5.1
  69.         HP LaserJet IID or IIID printer with decent fonts
  70.         18 sheets of nice paper
  71.         6 minutes
  72.  
  73. Load each document, adjust fonts if necessary, preview it, VERIFY THE
  74. LENGTH, and send it to print.  Simple, huh?
  75.  
  76. Arrange the pages in stardate order with the cover facing out.  Staple
  77. carefully on the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.
  78. Presto!
  79.  
  80. ** PRINTING ON A NON-DUPLEX PRINTER
  81.  
  82. You can still print copies if you have the following:
  83.  
  84.         microcomputer
  85.         WordPerfect 5.1
  86.         Epson LQ-510 or similar printer with a small font
  87.         18 sheets of nice paper
  88.         30 minutes
  89.  
  90. The Next Generation
  91. -------------------
  92.  
  93. Print the first 6 pages on one side of 6 pieces of paper.  Keep them in
  94. order!  Then print pages 7 through 12 on the opposite sides of these 6
  95. sheets.  Insert the sheets in the order that they were printed in the first
  96. run.  In other words, the WordPerfect page 7 is printed on the back of
  97. sheet 1, the WP page 8 on the back of sheet 2, et cetera.  Use the
  98. Multiple Pages command in the Print menu (M or 5) and enter "7-12" and
  99. press Enter.

  101. Arrange them in stardate with the cover facing out.  Staple carefully on
  102. the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.  See?

  104. Deep Space Nine
  105. ---------------
  106. Print pages 1 through 3.  Keep pages in order!  Send pages 4 through 6 to
  107. print.  Insert previously printed sheets in same order from first fun.
  108. WordPerfect's page 4 will print on back of sheet 1, WP page 5 will print on
  109. back of 2, etc.  Use the Multiple Pages command.

  111. Arrange into stardate order with cover facing out.  Staple careful along
  112. spine and fold in half.
  113.  
  114. ** OTHER PRINTERS
  115.  
  116. Obviously, you may not have these printers.  You can still print this
  117. document if you use fonts that are not too large.  The bulk of the document
  118. (particularly, each episode's description) is generated using the Epson's
  119. Roman font set to a horizontal pitch of 15 characters per inch.  The
  120. episode titles and stardate are printed in Roman 12 cpi.  The page header
  121. is in Sans Serif 12 cpi double-high.  The entire document is printed with a
  122. standard vertical pitch of 6 lines per inch.  If you do not have a duplex
  123. printer, just print using the .EPS version.
  124.  
  125. ** FONTS
  126.  
  127. In each of the documents, there are *some* specific fonts requested.  You
  128. may not have these available so some changes on your part may be necessary.
  129. The bulk of the document uses font size "attributes" however so as to
  130. minimize the impact of not having certain, esoteric fonts...
  131.  
  132. The episode description text is printed at a smaller size by using the
  133. "small" font attribute (selected via the Font [Ctrl-F8]|Size|Small command).
  134. By default, this is 80% the size of the normal font used by WordPerfect.
  135. If your "small" font is too large, you must select a smaller printer font.
  136. Do not attempt to replace the [SMALL] [small] print codes;  that is too
  137. difficult.
  138.  
  139. You can easily alter what WordPerfect interprets as small by
  140. using the command:  Setup [Shift-F1]|Initial Settings|Print Options|Size
  141. Attribute Ratios.  By default, this number is around 80%;  make it smaller,
  142. say 40 to 60%.
  143.  
  144. These settings are stored in the printer driver so it must be updated.
  145.  
  146. - go into the Print menu [Shift-F7]
  147. - select the Printer command (S)
  148. - highlight the printer for adjustment
  149. - select Update (U or 7)
  150.  
  151. The printer update is required if you do not have a Postscript printer.
  152.  
  153. ** GRAPHICS
  154.  
  155. A graphic of the Next Generation logo is included on the cover page of
  156. this guide.  If it does not print correctly on your printer, suppress
  157. the printing of graphics from the WordPerfect print menu.  Conversely,
  158. it you can print the graphic, ensure WordPerfect uses the highest 
  159. graphics quality.
  160.  
  161. - access the Print menu (Shift-F7)
  162. - select Graphics Quality (G)
  163. - set to not print (N or 1) or set to high quality (H)
  164.  
  165. ** CLOSING
  166.
